Your Genetic Inheritance
We know that our parents’ looks, such as their hair and eye color are handed on to their children, but it’s a fact of life that our potential to build muscle is also dependent on traits inherited from our ancestors. We have to accept that we may be limited because we may have inherited less natural ability in this area than others.
Having said that, there’s no excuse for not trying your hardest using your natural ability to improve your strength and physique. It’s often a matter of realizing your potential and your assets and working with them to achieve your goals. One way to analyze your potential is to assess your body shape, or somatotype.

Endomorph — This is the body type with short limbs, a round middle, and a thicker neck.
Mesomorph — This body is more muscular and has little body fat. Mesomorphs usually have broad shoulders and a well developed limbs and chest.
Ectomorph — This is a slim build with little body fat and smaller muscles.

What Are the Effects?
The body type commonly associated with muscle building is the mesomorph — narrow hips with broad shoulders and well balanced limbs. Not only is the inherited body type influential on your bodybuilding potential, but your parents’ muscle fiber density and neurological efficiency will also play a role.
Your muscles’ fiber density has a bearing on the limit to which you will be able to develop your muscles, and their neurological efficiency will determine how well your nervous system communicates with your muscles.
This means that those people disposed to better muscle growth have the capacity to stimulate up to 50 percent of the muscle fibers whereas most people can activate only a third of them. However, this shouldn’t discourage anyone, since it is impossible to scientifically determine either fiber density or the efficiency of the nerves, and this means it’s up to us to do our best with what we’re given — we can’t use science for an excuse not to perform. So can your genes limit your bodybuilding potential? Well its up to you to decide.
