There are a lot of people who suffer from bad breath. It is otherwise known as halitosis if you want a medical name for it. The problem is that not many people are even aware that they have it and asking yourself that question now might save embarrassment in the long run.
Go ahead ask yourself — is it possible that I could be one of those suffering? Since we understand that it is very hard to smell your own breath here are two things you can try, lick the back of your hand wait about 30 seconds and then smell, or you could go the easy route and ask a friend. Your choice.

So Why Does Your Breath Smell?
In most cases it is from the oral bacteria that live on our tongue. These are called volatile sulfur compounds and are quite pesky. Basically when they get built up and food is left in your mouth it in turn produces a lot of food for the bacteria to devour and make the delicious food that was once so good turn into a rogue compound that produces a horrible smell.
The thing is even if you are flossing and brushing on a daily basis sometimes the smell is hard to get rid of. Foods that are guilty of this are garlic and onions especially.
In the morning it is probably the worst, we all know morning breath is not a thing to brag about. But this is one good example of what halitosis can smell like to other people when you aren’t aware of it.

What Causes Morning Breath?
Well, at night saliva production is slowed down and it makes your mouth dry out which exasperates the issue. This is the cause of bad breath and it’s important to keep in mind because it usually means dehydration; which is another cause of bad breath during the day.
Discovering the root cause of the problem might go deeper than you think. Things like advanced or chronic periodontal disease will case the same foul smelling. This happens when bacteria are deep within the pockets between the teeth and gums.
There are rare cases when it is caused by a sinus infection, post-nasal drip, or even an infection that is in your tonsils. If you have tried the other methods it is essential that you see a physician to make sure these aren’t the reason.

How Can You Get Rid of Bad Breath?
The best way how to stop bad breath is by practicing good oral hygiene habits. This includes staying away from tobacco products, red meat, onions and garlic etc. You should absolutely brush your teeth and floss every day.
Another solution would be to bring along mints as a way to freshen your breath after meals or when you suspect your breath might smell, especially if you like garlic and burgers.
There are medications you can take if you want help beating bad breath. It is recommended to use a mouthwash that has chlorine dioxide, like Closys II mouthwash. The chlorine will get rid of the odor and kill bacteria that cause it. It is a viable way to eliminate the persistent problem. Since this product does not have alcohol it does not cause the eventual reduction of saliva flow which means it won’t make bad breath worsen over time.
You can also treat bad breath with a tongue scraper. It is very effective at removing the bacteria that sits at the back of our tongues. It sounds like a simple solution but it can be hard to adjust to at first, especially if you are prone to gagging.
Keep in mind that the times of the day that it is worst varies and that makes it important for you to discover when the worst is for you. As people get used to the tongue scraper in their pursuit of fresh breath the bacteria will become resistant and move further back.
For best results this should be a part of your daily regimen and make sure to replace it every 6 months. If you want to conduct a personal test you can stop using the scraper for a little while and after a period of time you will be able to detect a bad taste in your mouth.
If those things didn’t help, here are some other ways how to stop bad breath you can try:

Be sure to be brushing with the proper technique covering your entire mouth.
Check in with your dentist to ensure that you do not have a gum disease.
Make sure to hydrate adequately to have a good saliva flow and keep your mouth moist.
If you are having problems with a dry mouth than you can try sugar free gum for an increase in saliva.
Practice caution to avoid jaw aches and problems.
