As previously discussed in a former article, muscles have to be exercised to the point of failure for a hypertrophic response to happen. It doesn’t matter how many sets it takes to cause failure, so long as failure occurs. When you work your muscles to this point, your muscle tissues are damaged and require a recovery period so that the repair process can provide you with larger muscles through protein synthesis.
It is wise to wait the right amount of time before exposing those same muscles to more workouts — but how long you should rest between muscle building sessions?
How long does it take for your muscles to heal? According to current medical reports, it can take as long as five to seven days for muscles to completely heal and repair.
If you try to work out before the five to seven day period is over, you can cause more damage and prevent your muscles from growing any further. If you wish to remain active while your muscles are recuperating, you can participate in low-impact aerobic exercise and/or work other areas of your body.
Even if targeting these other areas requires using the muscle that is healing, you can use it without threat of damaging it again.
It is due to the necessary healing time that you should only train each group of muscles one time a week to provide adequate time for a full recovery. If you use a split training routine, you can still work out multiple times a week without exercising the same group of muscles more than once a week.
