At first sight of red bloodshot, irritated eyes looking back at you in the mirror, it may be quite disturbing. Bloodshot eyes can be the result of a number of different maladies. The condition occurs when the blood vessels in the white portion of your eye become enlarged and irritated.
Some common reasons for the redness of the eyes are excessive coughing, eyestrain, dry air, over-exposure to the sun, dust and allergens, an infection, trauma, fatigue, alcohol overdose, or a lack of vitamin B2 and B6 and high blood pressure.
Bloodshot eyes are also the symptom of:

Blepharitis – This is caused by skin bacteria and can lead to itching, Your eyelids may turn greasy and crusty.
Conjunctivitis – This is popularly known as Red Eye or Pink Eye. It is an inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by viruses, bacteria and allergies or skin irritations. Viral conjunctiva is very contagious, but will only last about four to seven days.
Corneal Ulcer – An open sore in the outer layer of the cornea, often caused by infection.
Uveitis – It causes inflammation of uvea, including the iris, ciliary body and choroids. It can also be linked to an autoimmune disorder, toxin exposure or infection.

Some Home Remedies You Can Try
Here are 4 home remedies for red eyes you can use for relief —

Reduce the irritation by splashing cold water over closed eyes. By soothing the eye and reducing inflammation, the blood vessels shrink and redness is reduced. Follow the water with a cold pack or ice, wrapped in a soft towel and press it gently over your irritated eyes.
A warm compress may also be effective to reduce the itchy feeling that accompanies bloodshot eyes. Alternate between warm and cool compresses until irritation has subsided and you no longer feel the urge to scratch at your eyes.
Consider using eye-drops of rose water to relieve the pain, or mix the rose water with milk and aloe vera and apply to your closed eyes with cotton pads for ten to twenty minutes in a dimly lit room. This will reduce the irritation and redness. You can also use non-preservative artificial tears, which help to sooth your eyes.
Goldenseal is a native medicinal plant that contains berberine which reverses the enlargement of your eyes’ blood vessels and helps in reducing the bloodshot effect. It can be used as a wash to eliminate pain, or as a compress to soothe.

Preventing Eyestrain
To avoid the infections and irritations that cause eye fatigue, follow some simple guidelines. Stay away from allergens which may irritate and redden your eyes. Always wear genuine, preservative-free contact lenses. And to strengthen the blood vessel walls and reduce risk of infection, eat 2 ripe tomatoes even before you had anything to eat, releasing vitamin C and flavonoids into the body to get the job done.
