One of the most damaging dental disorders, Bruxism, or teeth grinding, is particularly difficult to detect in the early stages, as patients are typically entirely oblivious to their injurious habit. Minor jaw clenching often leads to clenching and grinding of the teeth and extreme jaw movements.
Patients suffer facial pain when the top and bottom teeth clamp together jarringly, putting stress on the muscles, tissues and facial areas around the jaw. Serious problems such as jaw joint disorders, chronic jaw pain, migraines, earaches and damaged teeth may develop if the issue is not addressed.
The continuous tooth grinding of Bruxism damages the teeth completely and permanently. While this condition is very common among children, it is not solely restricted to the young; many older people with Fibromyalgia Syndrome suffer as well. Extreme and neglected cases of teeth clenching and grinding may lead to Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ).
While the most assured way to combat the problem of tooth grinding is to visit a doctor, there are many home remedies to stop teeth grinding, as well. Experiment with one of these below to see which may work for you —

Chew on an apple, carrot or piece of broccoli before going to bed; this calms the overactive muscles in your mouth and prevents grinding.
Use a warm washcloth before bedtime to relax the muscles in your jaw with a light massage. This relaxes the clenched muscles that create head pain.
Indulge in a warm bath and upper back massage to relax and avoid stress. Perform exercises that relieve stress to help you unwind. Squeeze a tennis ball — it may offer an unexpected level of relief.
Try sleeping on your back to reduce your body’s overall stress. Sleeping on your side or stomach may increase your chances of Bruxism.
Alternatively, use a contoured pillow to relieve the stress in your head. Lay your face on the contoured pillow and hold a regular pillow in your arms. This position prevents you from rolling over and onto your face, providing relief for your jaw and neck.
Reduce your intake of vices like alcohol, caffeine and the carbohydrates in candy and pastries. These inadvertently affect your sleep in myriad ways.
Finally, try Acupressure. Relaxing before a good night sleep may help you avoid incidents of teeth clenching or grinding.
